action TODAY

Look to this day,

For it is life, and the very life of life. In its brief course lie all the verities and realities of your existence;

The bliss of growth, the glory of action, the splendor of beauty.

For yesterday is but a dream and tomorrow is only a vision. But today well lived makes, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness. And every tomorrow a vision of hope.

Look well, therefore, to this day. Such is the salutation of the dawn.

The SUFI, 1200 BC
A man of knowledge lives by acting,
not by thinking about acting,
nor by thinking about what he will think when he is finished acting.
Thus a man of knowledge sweats and puffs and if one looks at him,
he is just like an ordinary man,
except that the folly of his life is under control.

There is Hope

Went rollerblading yesterday...first time in my life as far as I can remember. Going at snail's pace and being unbalanced most of the time. Only fell once on the butt, and I would be rather relieved with that. Alas, it was not to be.

Somebody who was just learning to ride a bike rammed me from behind. There was a sharp pain at my lower back. The impact was quite big and I didn't know what hit me. The young guy, probably not yet 20, and his friends were extremely concerned. I was glad I didn't pass out. It was just bruises on the skin though. My spine was still intact...phew!

What was most gratifying was the kindness and gentlemanly conduct of those kids. They were probably there for a class gathering/barbeque during the school holidays. The other two guys raced off in search of a first aid kit while CT stood by my side. He even offered to give his contact number just in case. We went our separate ways, but not before his profuse apologies and my reassurances that I'm fine.

Well, there is hope for the future. Morals and values can be passed on to make a more gracious society. With bated breath, I watch...

Seeds Not Fruits

A woman dreamt she walked into a shop in the marketplace and, to her surprise, found a wise man behind the counter.

"What do you sell here?" she asked.

"Everything your heart desires," said the wise man.

Hardly daring to believe what she was hearing, the woman decided to ask for the best things a human being could wish for.

"I wish for peace of mind and love and happiness and wisdom and freedom from fear," she said. Then as an after thought, she added, "Not just for me. For everyone on earth."

The wise man smiled. "I think you have got me wrong, my dear," he said. We don't sell fruits here. We only sell seeds."

The Big One

AC Milan ran riot, Liverpool just ran to celebrate

Simply Awesome

I was speechless. Guess many others were too. Liverpool versus AC Milan at Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey. Earlier this morning, the eagerly awaited clash between the two titans in european club football certainly did not fail to impress. In fact, this year's Champions League final, as in every season's last curtain in the european football calender, has been a brilliant spectacle, and a wonderful advert for the beautiful game.

It was like watching a drama unfold, based on a script very few would expect. The reds were soundly beaten in the first half, as the rosseneri ran riot and raced to a 3-0 lead. Second half seemed academic and one would think both teams would go through the motions and formalities before the stylish italian team lifts the cup. How more wrong could one be? Well, according to what happened in the next 15 mins or so, DEAD WRONG.

This final match was between two teams which are largely different in the way they have played their games over the course of the season. Italian chic versus English grit. Milan a team who scores for fun and Liverpool a team who tries to prevent that fun.

While those turkish skies were ablaze with fireworks, only English hearts were ablaze with pride. Having danced round Milan players, they could now dance round the cup in celebration. Delight for fans and supporters in the stadium and around the world...a woeful understatement.

As the chorus of the reds anthem "You'll never walk alone" was being sung, how fitting it was that club captain Gerrard and local lad Carragher together held the coveted trophy aloft. A time like this has been too long in coming, but who can say it has not been worth the wait?

I actually watched the Academy Award winning film "A Beautiful Mind" a few hours before. In certain ways, Livepool had been dealt the unfortunate blow which John Nash experienced. The team was amazing in the eighties, winning everything possible as a major force in club football. Then somehow their fortunes turned, and perhaps many people associated with the club were scratching their heads. I wouldn't go as far to say that the club was getting paranoid, though the entire AC Milan team, including coach Carlos Ancelotti, could be forgiven for feeling very much so. In any case, fans and players of Liverpool FC can finally put those ghosts of yesteryears to rest, those long empty seasons with nothing to show for, and revel in their latest triumph at the beautiful game. But I hope it won't be repeated...cos I am a MAN U fan. No offense. (haha, pun unintended)

Cyclic Serendipity

A year ago, things were going quite fine. Got myself a cool job (well, mostly cos the cubicle's rather private, hehe). And I was in NDP 2004 having lots of fun.

As for now...or for these past months, a little rough i gotta say... Trying to eke out a career in an area that's not my major, or minor for that matter, hasn't been easy. There has been much welcome distractions, some nice, some not so...important lessons learnt. Anyway, I'm just grateful all signs are pointing to better times again...

Was looking forward to meeting Dr Tay, my family doctor at the park today. He usually jogs around the same time. We usually say our casual hellos when we pass each other. But I have been feeling the urge to start a conversation recently. Perhaps I just want some justification of my priorities. He has been very supportive during my visits over the years. I wonder what he had to say about my situation now. Didn't manage to see him at the reservoir yesterday too... Like me, he alternates between the reservoir and the park. Would be great to catch him someday and have a good chat. Hmm...this time without having to pay the consultation fees! Hope it will be soon...
